::Day 6 -It's The Final Countdown::

Knowing how to teach Math is NOT enough. We need to also assess the children’s mathematics learning.
Found this in the text.
1.Assessing the procedural knowledge – children would be tested on their knowledge of the rules and procedures used in carrying out mathematics processes and also the symbolism used to represent mathematics (Walle et al., 2010, p.24)
2.Assessing the conceptual knowledge – children would be tested on their knowledge about the relationships or foundational ideas of a topic (Walle et al., 2010, p.24)

Dr Yeap spoke about the 2 types of assessments commonly used by teachers:
1.Paper and pencil test (which happened to be the MOST popular amongst teachers)
 2.Oral / interview test
Assessment can also be done as and when during the lesson itself. Why wait to give interviews or written tests when you could assess a child’s knowledge and understanding of a certain concept there and then in front of your very eyes?!
Referring back to the text, I agreed that we should not focused on assessing what children do not know but what children do know – what ideas they bring to a task, how they reason and what processes they use (Walle et al., 2010, p.76-77).
It all MAKES SENSE isn’t it?

The interesting part of today’s lesson was when we were told by Dr Yeap to go down to Bras Basah MRT and count the height of the staircase there.

Thanks Dr Yeap! So interesting. Me and my kebaya and high heels standing in the middle of an MRT walkway with a ruler NOT even a metre long and trying to count the height of the stairs.

Great.
BUT .. I do still find this activity cool though.
Something that the kids back in school might enjoy doing.
Ok. So here’s how I worked it out.
1)      Counted the number of stairs at each flight. (Ans: 16)
2)      Counted the number of flights. (Ans: 4)
3)      Counted TOTAL number of stairs. (Ans: 16x 4 =64)
4)      Measured the height of 1 stair. (Ans: 15 cm)
5)      Calculated the TOTAL height of the whole stretch of staircase.
(Ans: 64 x 15 = 960cm)

However, me and a few other girls were wondering IF our answer is right as we noticed there are actually some spaces in between each set of steps…
SO HOW
Next up …
KIDNEY BEANS!! Not to cook… Not to eat … BUT, to create a box that is JUST right to place 15 kidney beans. It mustn’t be tooo BIG nor tooo small!
To achieve the correct size of box, we will need to apply our pre- knowledge of volume & capacity ...
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY …
Do not underestimate the size of a box no matter how big or how small it is.
This activity is actually similar to pouring of water into containers of different sizes and shapes…

FINALLY … I am done with all my reflections. HOWEVER … I do still have a few more thoughts lingering in my mind about the whole course which I will post soon after I’m done with my Hari raya visitings and once I’m sober enough.
